We should all know by now that we live under grace and not under law (Romans 6 v 14 and 15).
Things changed when Jesus completed His work on the cross; we moved from law to grace, from old covenant to new covenant.
Under law there were many rules and regulations to be met, and 10 commandments to uphold.
Jesus ushered in the new covenant and brought in his own commandment; yes, He changed this as well!
Speaking to His disciples just before His death Jesus spoke of his “new commandment” (John 14 v 12).
In this passage Jesus does not speak on an “11th commandment”.
His commandment is a commandment to love; it is not a list of requirements and actions, but a mind set and whole mode of behaviour comprising of love.
All our actions and behaviours should come from this “new” way of thinking.
The overriding motive for Jesus was love and He asks this from us; love one another as I loved you is what He said.
In another passage of Scripture Jesus talks about 2 new commandments where we are to love God and love our neighbours (Mark 12 v 30 and 31).
This I think is still part of this one “new” commandment as it is still about love.
The only commandments brought in by Jesus are encompassed by love; we are simply to love.
That is what he did and that is what He expects of us.
Yes, out of this love will come good works and holy works, but they come as a fruit of that love.
Speak this out today…..”Thank you Lord that you loved us first, and thank you that we can love others from this state of being loved by You.”
John 14 v 12…..This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you
