DIG for Sunday the 18th of October…..standing for Stephen…..Acts 7 v 56

I often use the picture of Jesus sitting in Hebrews 10 to talk about the truth of Jesus’ finished work.

He is seated at the right hand of the Father, having completed His mission of reconciliation and forgiveness (Hebrews 10 v 12).

This is a wonderful picture of Jesus having accomplished His work.

But I also love this passage of Scripture where we see Jesus standing.

Stephen has just given an amazing sermon in front of his accusers and is now preparing himself for the inevitable death that is coming his way (Acts 6 v 8 to Acts 7 v 60).

Stephen looked up to Heaven and was given an amazing vision, seeing the heavens open and Jesus standing (Acts 7 v 56).

What an honour for Stephen, to see Jesus standing up for him, to welcome one of His flock home.

Now, I don’t think this was a special welcome for Stephen; I think this will be reserved for all His flock.

The Lord is no respecter of persons (He has no favourites) so what He does for on He will do for another.

Are you a child of God this evening; have you been adopted into His family and are therefore a joint-heir with Christ?

If you said yes I believe that He will stand for you too, as you head into glory and eternity.

You may be thinking but I’m not a martyr, I’ve not done what Stephen did.

Well I think the Lord is standing for him because of who he is (a born again believer and member of the family of God), not because of what He did.

I say this as God does not seem bothered about our works, after all Jesus said our “work” was to be to love Him.

God looks on us at the level of spirit to spirit so is far more interested in who we are in Christ and through Christ than what we do.

Ever born again believer is the same in spirit, that is holy, pure, perfect and righteous.

Jesus stood for Stephen, I believe He will sand for you and I.

Speak this out today…..”Thank you Lord for who I am in Christ and through Christ; thank you that I am holy and pure and righteous”.

Acts 7 v 56…..And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God
