The Bible is sometimes difficult to understand, what with the old English of the King James Version and all that, but sometimes it is crystal clear.
The Word says that now we are under grace and not under law (Romans 6 v 14 and 15).
The Word says that the law is not for the righteous man (1 Timothy 1 v 9).
The Word says that if you have been born again your new man was made righteous (2 Corinthians 5 v 21).
This is very clear; if you are born again you are righteous so the law is not for you and if you are alive today (which I can assume as you are reading this) you are living under the new covenant so you are not under law.
I don’t think the Word of God can be any clearer than that.
There is also one other issue that crops up when I talk like this, the sin issue.
Just because I say (well actually the Word says) that we are not under law, I am not saying that we can sin.
This is the assumption that a lot of people make when I take about being under grace and not under law, not always but quite often.
I say nothing about sin or sinning, yet the legalistic and the religious person (the man of law) will bring it up!
You see, people who say they live by the law are very sin conscious, people of grace are not, and what we focus on enlarges in our minds.
By striving to stop sinning through using the law will actually force a person into sin, the law strengthens sin, once again that is what the Word says not me (1 Corinthians 15 v 56).
I am not saying I am not concerned by sin (as an individual and as a pastor I am very concerned about the negative effects of sin), but I am just not obsessed by it like a man of law!
The man of grace will focus on Jesus and His finished work, while the man of law will focus on sin and on their own efforts.
In terms of seeing less sin in our lives and living a more holy life grace works, law does not!
Grace puts the attention on Jesus, while law puts the attention on you, on your efforts and of course on your sin.
Paul in his epistle to the Galatian church warns about the dangers of legalism and religion, of putting yourself under the bondage of law.
He also tells us in this epistle about grace, about Jesus and His finished work and that is good news.
Speak this out today…..”Thank you Lord that I live under grace and not under law and thank you that as a righteous man the law is not for me”.
Romans 6 v 14 and 15…..For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. What then? Shall we sin, because we are not under law, but under grace? God forbid
