The Greek word for gospel is euangelion and means good news; actually it implies that it is “almost too good to be true” news.
As today there seemed to be many versions of the Gospel being preached in the early church.
Paul wrote to the church in Galatia about this, warning them that there was only one true Gospel.
The grace of Jesus Christ was the Gospel that he had taught them, and this was the Gospel that had been revealed to him by the Lord Jesus Himself (Galatians 1 v 11 and 12).
Paul asked why the believers were “going over” to another gospel; the Greek word here means completely different, not at all similar.
In verse 7 he uses the word another again but this time it means of the same kind.
So Paul is saying there is not another gospel that is similar to the true Gospel, anything else (even if it looks similar) is completely different.
There is only one Gospel, and it is the grace of Jesus Christ.
Grace is good news; grace is almost too good to be true!
The finished work of Jesus Christ provides all that we need to live a life full of abundance and godliness; we cannot do anything of our own strength to achieve this.
Paul was countering different doctrines (I’ll not even call them gospels) in the early church that put the emphasis on self-effort, good works and religious performance.
The same are to be countered in the church today.
Jesus was enough back then and Jesus is enough now!
Speak this out today…..”Thank you Lord for the finished work of Jesus Christ, thank you for the one true Gospel”.
