The virgin birth is a ‘controversial’ topic in the church, with many theologians (and a previous Archbishop) stating that this doctrine is not essential.
Many say that we can believe in Jesus yet not believe in the virgin birth.
I believe otherwise, the virgin birth is essential doctrine if we are to believe in the finished work of Jesus.
Jesus dealt with sin once and for all at the cross (Hebrews 10 v 12 and 14).
He dealt with sin as a perfect man, sinless and pure.
Jesus was born sinless and this was essential for Him to fulfil His purpose.
Jesus could only be born sinless if He was born as a man but not born of a man.
Joseph, a sinner like the rest of us, was not His biological Father.
Mary was ‘impregnated’ by the Holy Spirit, for nothing with God is impossible (Luke 1 v 35 and 37).
The virgin birth was possible and is essential for our Christian faith.
It is essential for the death and resurrection of Jesus to be worthwhile.
If Jesus was not sinless He could not have done what He did, so the virgin birth is essential doctrine to believe and understand.
There are some ideas and beliefs we could disagree on, but this is not one of them; Jesus was born via a virgin birth, it was possible and it had to be to make His finished work legitimate.
