DIG for Monday the 29th of January…..share some good news today…..Hebrews 10 v 24

We had an amazing time of testimony in church yesterday, with people sharing about how the Word has changed their lives.

This is wonderful to see as a pastor and teacher.

I know that the Word will change lives, and I know that good doctrine is what is required.

But it is wonderful to hear others say this after they have been changed themselves.

It is great to hear when people have had a success in their lives; it is great to hear when something has gone well.

A sister said this to me yesterday, “Maybe I should phone you when things have gone well, instead of just calling you when I need help”.

This was a real sign of maturity, with this sister recognising that we can encourage and build each other up with our good news.

I’ve often said that this life is impossible without interaction with others.

We are here to help each other and build each other up; that is what church should be all about.

We are supposed to provoke each other unto love and good works (Hebrews 10 v 24), and we cannot do this if we spend our time alone.

We should be spending time with people, and preferably giving them some good news.

What good news have you got to share this evening?

And have you told anyone yet?

Speak this out today…..”Thank you Lord for all the good things you have given me and thank you for your love, mercy and compassion”.

Hebrews 10 v 24…..And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works

DIG for Thursday the 7th of December…..is your theology and doctrine from the Word or from your failed experience…..3 John 2

I heard an amazing quote in a teaching I was listening to last night; the teaching was by a chap called Lance Wallnau.

He said, “We have reduced our theology to the level of our failed experience”.

I agree completely with this statement, I just wish I could have put it as succinctly as Lance!

Take for example the doctrine or theology of healing.

Many in the church think that healing is not for us today; given that they see illness all around us and given that they do not see everyone being healed.

The Word says that by His stripes we were healed (1 Peter 2 v 24 and Isaiah 53 v 5).

The Word says that above all things the Lord wants us to live in health and prosperity (3 John 2).

Scripture is clear that healing was provided (for everyone) at the cross of Christ, and the Word of God should be where we find our theology and doctrine.

Many believers however try and fit their theology and doctrine around their (failed) experience rather than the Word of God.

If we see that everyone is not healed, we believe that healing is not for everyone.

What we should be doing is trying to find out what is blocking the flow of this healing that Jesus has already provided for us.

Our theology should be increased up to the Word of God rather than reduced to our failed experience.

Speak this out today….”Thank you for the healing that I have already been provided with through the finished work of Jesus”.

3 John 2…..Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth

DIG for Friday the 30th of June…..indoctrination and brain washing can be a good thing…..Romans 12 v 2

Doctrine seems to be a word that has a ‘bad’ reputation in the world and in the church.

It conjures up images of indoctrination and brain washing, and this of course has happened over the years many times in a negative way.

However, as I said in church last week, indoctrination can be a good thing.

It is a good thing if Biblical doctrine, i.e. the truth, is being used.

When we are born again our spirit is made perfect, however our soul (mind, will and emotions) is not.

This needs to be renewed; in a sense you could say we need our ‘brain washed’ to remove the nonsense and filth of the world.

Mind renewal (or washing our brain of nonsense and replacing with the truth) is a Biblical truth and an essential process for growth (Romans 12 v 2).

Indeed this is the only process that guarantees lasting and permanent change for the believer.

Doctrine is not a bad thing; it is simply the teaching of a teacher.

And when this teaching is Biblical truth from a teacher rightly dividing the Word of God it is powerful.

Good sound doctrine can change your life.

Good sound doctrine will change your life if you let it.

But you need to remember bad doctrine can have the opposite effect, so take car in what you listen to and what you read and watch.

Speak this out today……”Thank you Lord for your Word and thank you that this should be the basis of our doctrine”.

Romans 12 v 2…..And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of GOD

DIG for Wednesday the 6th of July…..enjoy and rejoice in the simple things in life…..Philippians 4 v 4

I’ve been known to do a bit of bird watching now and again, and used to enjoy hunting for rare and unusual ones.

Yesterday as I was sitting in my car I was watching a blackbird and thrush feeding in the grass.

These are very common birds, not rare at all, however I was really enjoying watching them find their lunch.

Through them the Lord told me to keep enjoying the simple things in life and to rejoice in the simple things.

He then told me with regards to things of the Kingdom, not to look for the “special” or for the “new”, but to enjoy the “simple”.

And more importantly He told me to tell this to His church.

Good teaching and good doctrine are simple things to be greatly enjoyed.

So with regards to teaching and doctrine we are not to go looking for the “special” or the “new”.

Good and simple teaching and doctrine (or the understanding of it) may not seem the most exciting thing in the Kingdom, however it is what will change your life for the better.

There is nothing “new” and nothing “special” that can do what the understanding of good teaching and good doctrine can do.

The “new” and “special” may give you goose bumps and make you feel good for a wee while but it will not result in lasting and permanent transformation.

Enjoy the simple things in the Kingdom, the truth of good teaching and good doctrine.

Speak this out today…..”Thank you Lord for good and sound teaching and doctrine, and thank you for the change it will make in my life”.

Philippians 4 v 4…..Rejoice in the Lord, always: sand again I say, Rejoice

DIG for Wednesday the 1st of June…..explanation and demonstration, that is what is required…..1 Timothy 4 v 16

While typing out the verse in DIG yesterday I noticed a very important point that I’d not absorbed earlier.

I said our doctrine can save others and ourselves, well Paul said it first!

What it actually says is that others who “hear thee” will be saved.

This is a very important part of the verse; we have to speak out to people what we understand and believe.

How else will they hear us if we do not tell them?

This word hear however is so much more than just listening and hearing sound, it means to comprehend and understand.

What this verse is really saying is that we need to teach others in order to save them!

We need to not only speak out the truth, we need to explain it, and I would suggest that we should live it too, in order to give the message some degree of credibility.

People understand a truth better if they see it as well as hear it.

If we do this with the good news about Jesus, about his finished work and what we can have through it, people who hear (understand and comprehend) will be saved; that is what this verse is saying.

We can make a huge impact on the lives of others by explaining and demonstrating the true doctrine of Jesus Christ.

We as born again believers have a responsibility to speak out and show good doctrine, so ensure that you are rightly dividing the Word and listening to good teachers!

Speak this out today…..”Thank you Lord for your Word and thank you for good doctrine”.

1 Timothy 4 v 16…..Take heed unto thyself, and unto doctrine: continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt save thyself, and them that hear thee

DIG for Tuesday the 31st of May…..doctrine will save you and others…..1 Timothy 4 v 16

I’ve often heard people say, “I don’t want any doctrine” as if it is a dirty word or bad concept.

Doctrine is simply what we are taught by a teacher, it is what we understand and believe about Scripture.

In that sense every single person has a doctrine that they believe.

The Word tells us that we are what we think (Proverbs 23 v 7), so the doctrine that we adhere to has a great effect on our lives.

Paul told Timothy to take heed of the doctrine, which is the apostle’s doctrine that Paul taught.

The doctrine Paul taught was the doctrine for Timothy and it is the doctrine for us, and if we follow these teachings we can save ourselves and others (1 Timothy 4 v 16).

There is a reverse side to this verse of course; if we adhere to wrong doctrine and wrong teaching we can harm others and ourselves.

Paul was of course writing to a believer so this verse is for those already saved, so here Paul is talking about on-going salvation in terms of joy and peace, healing and wholeness and prosperity.

Correct doctrine will move you into healing and wholeness, peace and prosperity.

Wrong doctrine will see you sick and poor!

So doctrine (what we understand and believe about the Word as we are taught by a teacher) is important, it is very important.

Our doctrine will impact on the quality of life for us and for others.

Speak this out today…..”Thank you Lord for your Word and Holy Spirit, enabling us to have good doctrine”.

1 Timothy 4 v 16…..Take heed unto thyself, and unto doctrine: continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt save thyself, and them that hear thee

DIG for Tuesday the 12th of January……He is good, always good and anything else is a perversion of the gospel…..John 7 v 16

“You’re a good, good Father, It’s who You are”; this is what the worship leader is singing on YouTube this morning, but is this true?

I would say yes, but the world and a lot of the church seems to say otherwise.

We are told God uses illness and death in order to teach us, help us and improve us.

When my kids were younger I never hurt them intentionally, even if it would have resulted in them “learning a lesson”.

In the Word Jesus tells us that He is the same as the Father and that He only does what He sees His Father do.

Jesus never made anyone ill; He was the Healer in the Gospels, so we can say the same of Father God.

Jesus, as the express image of the Father was good, and so we can say the same of God (Hebrews 1 v 3).

The leper asked Jesus if He would make him whole, He said yes; if this illness had come from God He would have been going against the wishes of His Father.

God is not a schizophrenic, having one nature one minute and another the next, make ill one minute and healing the next.

When Jesus came to earth as a man He had a doctrine and it was the same doctrine of His Father.

That doctrine (the teaching of a teacher) is that God is good and that is what Jesus portrayed as He strode this earth.

Speak this out today…..”Thank you Lord that you are a good, good God and thank you that you are good tome”.

John 7 v 16…..Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me

DIG for Thursday the 7th of January…..everything, He created everything…..Genesis 1 v 1

When I was a young man I deluded myself that there was no God.

I was an advocate of evolution, the Big Bang, in fact anything and everything that would say there was no God.

It was only once I came to faith that I took a serious look at these issues and saw that they were fatally flawed.

Many people now think that I am deluded and blindly accepting dogma and doctrine, it was back then I was doing that!

The Bible has vast amounts to say about creation, the way we are made up and the way we think and operate.

Indeed science is actually starting to catch up with the Bible in terms of what causes some illness and the way thoughts and words have power in our lives.

Blindly accepting evolution and the Big Bang instead of actively seeking out the truth was the mistake I made for years, and it is the mistake many are making today.

The order and composition of the universe points to an intelligent designer (I would say God), with the very first verse in the Bible pointing to all that He created.

For the universe to function and operate the way we know it does it needs three things; it needs time, space and matter.

Genesis 1 incorporates these three elements.

In the beginning (time) God created the heavens (space) and the earth (matter).

That was what was required to “build” our amazing universe, our planet and us.

You are part of His amazing creation; you are not just a bag of chemicals and elements or a fluke of nature.

Speak this out today…..”Thank you Lord that you are the Mighty Creator, and thank you for this earth and for my life”.

Genesis 1 v 1…..In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth

DIG for Friday the 18th of September…..this is not rocket science…..John 10 v 10

The Bible is not a difficult book to understand if it is rightly divided.

It only becomes confusing when men make it confusing with their traditions, philosophies and religion (Colossians 2 v 8).

Take for instance James 4 v 7, where we read about submitting to God and resisting the devil.

Religion has got many confused when thinking about what comes from God (and is to be submitted to) and what is from the devil (and is to be resisted).

There is a really simple rule to follow when considering this verse; if something is good it is form God and if it is bad it is from the devil.

That may sound too simple to you, but that is the truth.

The enemy sends bad things against us, wanting to steal, kill and destroy what we already have from Jesus through His finished work (John 10 v 10).

God only wants good things for us and has provided this already via Jesus ad what He has done (John 10 v 10).

He wants us to live in abundance and above all things want us to live in health and prosperity (3 John 2).

He therefore sends us only good things (James 1 v 17).

Don’t be confuse by religion telling us that God sends bad things in order to improve us, humble us and teach us a lesson; that is religious nonsense!

We all have an intuitive knowledge of what is good and bad.

Health and abundance are good and is from God, while sickness and poverty are not good and are not from God; yes, it really is that simple.

Speak this out today…..”Thank you Lord that you love me and that you have only provided good things for me”.

John 10 v 10…..The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly

DIG for Thursday the 23rd of July…..Jesus was consistent, a model we should follow…..Hebrews 13 v 8

I love times of study and meditation in the Word, especially when you get revelation about a passage or verse.

This morning as I was reading Hebrews 13 I saw that as well as a statement about the unchanging nature of Jesus, Hebrews 13 v 8 is about leadership and doctrine.

This verse comes after a verse about leaders, especially those who speak the Word of God, so probably teachers and pastors (Hebrews 13 v 7).

And the verse comes before one about doctrine, that we should not be carried away with strange doctrines (Hebrews 13 v 9).

The thought then struck me, “why stick a verse about the unchanging nature of Jesus in there?”

Well, it is to give us a picture of stability, of unwavering consistency and absolute truth.

It is saying that the doctrine of grace that we teach as leaders needs to be stable and consistent and of absolute truth.

It means that you need to find leaders in the Kingdom that teaches the doctrine of grace with passion and consistency.

Mixture (i.e. preaching grace and law together) is the curse of the church today.

Mixture is what confuses the believer and results in double-mindedness and doubt.

There was never any wavering or mixture with Jesus, He was the same yesterday, today and forever.

The same should be true of our doctrine; our hearts require to be established with grace, not with mixture.

Do not get carried about, transported from hither and thither, going from one doctrine to another; establish your heart in grace.

Speak this out today…..”Thank you Lord that Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever”.

Hebrews 13 v 8……Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and today, and for ever
