DIG for Monday the 29th of January…..share some good news today…..Hebrews 10 v 24

We had an amazing time of testimony in church yesterday, with people sharing about how the Word has changed their lives.

This is wonderful to see as a pastor and teacher.

I know that the Word will change lives, and I know that good doctrine is what is required.

But it is wonderful to hear others say this after they have been changed themselves.

It is great to hear when people have had a success in their lives; it is great to hear when something has gone well.

A sister said this to me yesterday, “Maybe I should phone you when things have gone well, instead of just calling you when I need help”.

This was a real sign of maturity, with this sister recognising that we can encourage and build each other up with our good news.

I’ve often said that this life is impossible without interaction with others.

We are here to help each other and build each other up; that is what church should be all about.

We are supposed to provoke each other unto love and good works (Hebrews 10 v 24), and we cannot do this if we spend our time alone.

We should be spending time with people, and preferably giving them some good news.

What good news have you got to share this evening?

And have you told anyone yet?

Speak this out today…..”Thank you Lord for all the good things you have given me and thank you for your love, mercy and compassion”.

Hebrews 10 v 24…..And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works

DIG for Friday the 30th of June…..indoctrination and brain washing can be a good thing…..Romans 12 v 2

Doctrine seems to be a word that has a ‘bad’ reputation in the world and in the church.

It conjures up images of indoctrination and brain washing, and this of course has happened over the years many times in a negative way.

However, as I said in church last week, indoctrination can be a good thing.

It is a good thing if Biblical doctrine, i.e. the truth, is being used.

When we are born again our spirit is made perfect, however our soul (mind, will and emotions) is not.

This needs to be renewed; in a sense you could say we need our ‘brain washed’ to remove the nonsense and filth of the world.

Mind renewal (or washing our brain of nonsense and replacing with the truth) is a Biblical truth and an essential process for growth (Romans 12 v 2).

Indeed this is the only process that guarantees lasting and permanent change for the believer.

Doctrine is not a bad thing; it is simply the teaching of a teacher.

And when this teaching is Biblical truth from a teacher rightly dividing the Word of God it is powerful.

Good sound doctrine can change your life.

Good sound doctrine will change your life if you let it.

But you need to remember bad doctrine can have the opposite effect, so take car in what you listen to and what you read and watch.

Speak this out today……”Thank you Lord for your Word and thank you that this should be the basis of our doctrine”.

Romans 12 v 2…..And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of GOD

DIG for Wednesday the 6th of July…..enjoy and rejoice in the simple things in life…..Philippians 4 v 4

I’ve been known to do a bit of bird watching now and again, and used to enjoy hunting for rare and unusual ones.

Yesterday as I was sitting in my car I was watching a blackbird and thrush feeding in the grass.

These are very common birds, not rare at all, however I was really enjoying watching them find their lunch.

Through them the Lord told me to keep enjoying the simple things in life and to rejoice in the simple things.

He then told me with regards to things of the Kingdom, not to look for the “special” or for the “new”, but to enjoy the “simple”.

And more importantly He told me to tell this to His church.

Good teaching and good doctrine are simple things to be greatly enjoyed.

So with regards to teaching and doctrine we are not to go looking for the “special” or the “new”.

Good and simple teaching and doctrine (or the understanding of it) may not seem the most exciting thing in the Kingdom, however it is what will change your life for the better.

There is nothing “new” and nothing “special” that can do what the understanding of good teaching and good doctrine can do.

The “new” and “special” may give you goose bumps and make you feel good for a wee while but it will not result in lasting and permanent transformation.

Enjoy the simple things in the Kingdom, the truth of good teaching and good doctrine.

Speak this out today…..”Thank you Lord for good and sound teaching and doctrine, and thank you for the change it will make in my life”.

Philippians 4 v 4…..Rejoice in the Lord, always: sand again I say, Rejoice

DIG for Wednesday the 1st of June…..explanation and demonstration, that is what is required…..1 Timothy 4 v 16

While typing out the verse in DIG yesterday I noticed a very important point that I’d not absorbed earlier.

I said our doctrine can save others and ourselves, well Paul said it first!

What it actually says is that others who “hear thee” will be saved.

This is a very important part of the verse; we have to speak out to people what we understand and believe.

How else will they hear us if we do not tell them?

This word hear however is so much more than just listening and hearing sound, it means to comprehend and understand.

What this verse is really saying is that we need to teach others in order to save them!

We need to not only speak out the truth, we need to explain it, and I would suggest that we should live it too, in order to give the message some degree of credibility.

People understand a truth better if they see it as well as hear it.

If we do this with the good news about Jesus, about his finished work and what we can have through it, people who hear (understand and comprehend) will be saved; that is what this verse is saying.

We can make a huge impact on the lives of others by explaining and demonstrating the true doctrine of Jesus Christ.

We as born again believers have a responsibility to speak out and show good doctrine, so ensure that you are rightly dividing the Word and listening to good teachers!

Speak this out today…..”Thank you Lord for your Word and thank you for good doctrine”.

1 Timothy 4 v 16…..Take heed unto thyself, and unto doctrine: continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt save thyself, and them that hear thee

DIG for Tuesday the 31st of May…..doctrine will save you and others…..1 Timothy 4 v 16

I’ve often heard people say, “I don’t want any doctrine” as if it is a dirty word or bad concept.

Doctrine is simply what we are taught by a teacher, it is what we understand and believe about Scripture.

In that sense every single person has a doctrine that they believe.

The Word tells us that we are what we think (Proverbs 23 v 7), so the doctrine that we adhere to has a great effect on our lives.

Paul told Timothy to take heed of the doctrine, which is the apostle’s doctrine that Paul taught.

The doctrine Paul taught was the doctrine for Timothy and it is the doctrine for us, and if we follow these teachings we can save ourselves and others (1 Timothy 4 v 16).

There is a reverse side to this verse of course; if we adhere to wrong doctrine and wrong teaching we can harm others and ourselves.

Paul was of course writing to a believer so this verse is for those already saved, so here Paul is talking about on-going salvation in terms of joy and peace, healing and wholeness and prosperity.

Correct doctrine will move you into healing and wholeness, peace and prosperity.

Wrong doctrine will see you sick and poor!

So doctrine (what we understand and believe about the Word as we are taught by a teacher) is important, it is very important.

Our doctrine will impact on the quality of life for us and for others.

Speak this out today…..”Thank you Lord for your Word and Holy Spirit, enabling us to have good doctrine”.

1 Timothy 4 v 16…..Take heed unto thyself, and unto doctrine: continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt save thyself, and them that hear thee

DIG for Saturday the 3rd of January……away from sound doctrine and turn unto fables…..2 Timothy 4 v 2

Paul wrote to Timothy about a time when believers would rather listen to fables from false teachers than sound doctrine from the word of God.

I don’t know exactly when this time started but it is definitely here with us today.

It seems that less and less believers are interested in the Bible these days, let alone good teaching from it.

Many do not even take a Bible to church or other Christian events or meetings.

Hold a meeting where you advertise “an experience with God” or a “manifestation of His glory cloud” or “see feathers and gold dust manifest” and you seem to get those from the church flocking.

Hold a meeting of “bible study” or “sound doctrine” and believers seem to stay away in their droves.

Yes, the time of 2 Timothy 4 v 3 and 4 is well and truly here with us.

Good teaching and sound doctrine, preaching with patience and understanding, is what we need to be changed and built up (2 Timothy 4 v 3).

The Holy Scriptures, rightly divided and taught, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, is the agent for true change in this world.

Experiential manifestations may sound more entertaining but they will not result in lasting, permanent change.

Only the Word of God, bringing revelation and understanding about Jesus and His finished work will change you for the better.

Let the Word of God be your guide this year.

Speak this out today…..”Thank you Lord for your inspired Holy Scriptures, and thank you that they are there for my instruction and encouragement”.

2 Timothy 4 v 2…..Preach the word: be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine

DIG for Wednesday the 14th of August…..Is your doctrine sound?…..Titus 2:1

‘Doctrine’ is not a dirty word, but sometimes I see people wrinkle their noses at it, as if it’s divisive or unnecessary, but doctrine is vital; as long as it’s sound!

The Greek word used for doctrine is didaskalia which means ‘the teachings of a teacher’, so it should be easy to have a sound doctrine; listen to teacher!

The Word is our absolute authority for building sound doctrine.

We take scriptures, and as Paul says, ‘rightly divide’ them (2 Tim 2:15), then put them together to build our understanding of what is true doctrine, not handling the Word of God deceitfully (2 Corinthians 4:2), but honestly and openly.

Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would be our guide and that He would lead us into all truth (John 16:13-15). As we use His Word for all that it is meant to be used for (2 Tim 3:16) we give the Holy Spirit the opportunity to guide us into all truth.

He wants to be our teacher but we have to turn up to class!

There is a lot out there that has nothing to do with sound doctrine…..

….Jewish fables and commandments of men (Titus 1:14)
….Philosophy and vain deceit, tradition of men (Col 2:8)
….Meat, drink, holy days, new moon, Sabbath days (Col 2:16)
….Worshipping of angels (Col 2:18)…

As we renew our minds with the Word of God we are building sound doctrine.

Our foundation is Jesus Christ. His finished work must be central to any doctrine that can be called ‘sound’.

Speak this out today…..”Thank you, Lord, that Your Word is Truth and that Your Holy Spirit is leading me into all truth”.

Titus 2:1 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine

Lessons in Love Introduction

In this first meeting of Lessons in Love, Nunsy introduces her new teaching series based on Titus 2 v 4, and then continues into her first foundational teaching.

I would recommend this wonderful teaching to everyone and not just ladies.

Nunsy gives us a brief history of her journey with the Lord and then brings what we have in Christ; and we see that sin is not an issue any more!
